Foster Care Best Practices
1.00 NAPNAP Contact Hour. This continuing education activity is offered at a reduced rate to NAPNAP Members. This continuing education activity rate is $10 for NAPNAP Members. For non- members, this continuing education activity rate is $20. This course will discuss Best Practices in Foster Care. Children and adolescents involved in the foster care system experience disproportionately high rates of chronic medical conditions, mental health disorders, developmental delays, and the long-term effects of trauma and placement instability. Advanced practice providers (APPs) in pediatric settings are uniquely positioned to mitigate these disparities; however, many report limited formal training in foster care–specific health needs, interprofessional collaboration, and child welfare systems. This course is designed to equip pediatric advanced practice providers and educators with evidence-based best practices for delivering comprehensive, trauma-informed, and developmentally appropriate care to youth in foster care. Content will address: The epidemiology of health disparities in foster care The impact of adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress across the lifespan The role of the APP in care coordination, advocacy, and partnership with child welfare, mental health, and community systems Learners will explore: strategies for conducting comprehensive health assessments, supporting caregivers and placement stability, and promoting health equity through culturally responsive and family-centered approaches. Emphasis is placed on translating current research and policy into clinical practice and educational settings to improve health outcomes for children and adolescents in foster care.
