Firearm injuries (unintentional and intentional) are the leading cause of death in children. How can this be? The associated morbidity of these injuries is devastating for patients, families, providers, and organizations. Case scenarios will be presented capturing demographics, associated injuries and care, physical and mental impact, and related policy initiatives. The “costs” of these injuries and secondary trauma are devastating and will be described. We are vastly under resourced to combat this epidemic. Current health policy initiatives and the role of the pediatric focused advanced practice registered nurse in advocating for affected children and their families will be summarized. This epidemic must become a population health priority at the local, state and national levels. |

The NP is a gatekeeper for the children and families involved in the welfare system.
