Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake remains low among adolescents and young adults at high risk due to various barriers, such as decreased access to care, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) stigma, and misinformation. The barriers to the uptake of PrEP among adolescents and young adults are multifaceted and require comprehensive mitigation strategies. Presented is the epidemiology of HIV, pathophysiology, and complications of HIV in adolescents, history of PrEP research, “How to End the HIV Epidemic in the U.S.” plan, reviewing and eliminating barriers to PrEPcare, PrEP curriculum opportunities for the provider, and the role of the nurse practitioner in reducing new HIV diagnoses in adolescents. The purpose of this program is to inform primary care pediatric health care providers about the management of children and adolescents with obesity guided by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Clinical Practice Guidelines published in 2023. The presentation content focuses on how to implement best practices for the management of children and adolescents with obesity including pharmacotherapy. Additionally, guidance on the AAP resources and how to access and utilize these tools will be discussed.

1.00 NAPNAP Contact Hour. This course is an archived session from NAPNAP's Pediatric Virtual Symposium: 2024 Targeted Topics. The 2023 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) CPG for the Evaluation and Treatment of Obesity in Children and Adolescents recommends that children 2-18 years with overweight/obesity be comprehensively evaluated for comorbidities and offered multicomponent, family-based, Intensive Health Behavior and Lifestyle Treatment (IHBLT). This session will focus on the core components of IHBLT and the associated health outcomes. Additionally, participants will learn how to locate recognized Family Healthy Weight Programs and steps to take if there are no local programs. Led by a member of the AAP clinical practice guideline writing team and a member of the NAPNAP Childhood Obesity SIG, this session will help primary care providers assess and build their capacity around IHBLT.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently released the ‘Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for the Evaluation and Treatment of Children and Adolescents with Obesity’ in early 2023. Updated from the AAP’s 2008 recommendations for prevention, assessment, and treatment of children and adolescents with overweight and obesity, the 2023 CPG offers expanded treatment recommendations which includes medication and surgical management. Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PNP) may not understand the long-term management and support needs in primary care needed for this population. Discussion of management considerations for the primary care provider include: preventative care and screenings, health promotion, nutrition, body image, physical activity and psychological support. Additionally, recommendations for family and community involvement to support improved long-term care outcomes will be discussed.
