According to the CDC, 2-5 million, animal bites occur annually in the United States and per the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), close to 10,000 insect bites or stings were reported to their centers. This presentation will be delivered in a case study format to help the participant identify needed history taking, recognize proper wound care if needed, and delineate required interventions. Lastly, appropriate pharmacology will be introduced, including a discussion on if and when antimicrobials and prophylaxis are warranted.

The associated morbidity of these injuries is devastating for patients, families, providers, and organizations. The “costs” of these injuries and secondary trauma are devastating and will be described. We are vastly under resourced to combat this epidemic. Current health policy initiatives and the role of the pediatric focused advanced practice registered nurse in advocating for affected children and their families will be summarized. This epidemic must become a population health priority at the local, state and national levels.

Preparing Your Pediatric Practice to Care for Adolescents with Opioid Use Disorders

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends medication assisted treatment for adolescents with opioid use disorders (MOUD) but less than 12% of affected youth ever receive treatment and even fewer receive MOUD. In an effort to get evidence-based treatment to people with OUD, in 2021 the HHS relaxed the laws that govern MOUD prescribing. Similar to collaborative care approaches to treatment of other mental health disorders, pediatric-focused NPs should be the first person their patients look to for helping them recover from OUDs. This case-based presentation will give participants an overview of screening and evidence-based treatment for youth with OUDs, followed by practical advice and resources for preparing a practice to care for this population.

Research shows that early identification of child physical abuse reduces the rate of subsequent injury and death by up to 50%, yet children are not consistently screened for physical abuse due to insufficient provider knowledge and lack of a systematic screening protocol. This presentation will provide an overview of child physical abuse, including red flags and injuries that are suspicious for abuse. Using interactive case studies, participants will learn how to utilize the validated Escape instrument to screen and identify children at high risk for physical abuse. The presenter will also review an example screening protocol, important documentation guidelines and screening considerations for acute and primary care NPs across a variety of pediatric settings.
