Fever is Our Friend: How to Help Parents Not Fear Fever

These visits are often fueled by the phenomenon known as fever phobia. Myths and misconceptions related to fever and its sequela often result in fever mistreatment and fever over treatment. This course will help novice though advanced providers strengthen their ability to confidently manage fever in children while providing sound anticipatory guidance to parents in an effort to allay their fears.

Creating Lactation Services in a Breastfeeding Friendly Office

Baby Friendly Hospital Initiatives help to improve exclusive breastfeeding initiation but continued support is needed to maintain breastfeeding rates post discharge.  This course discusses why a lactation service should be imbedded in the primary care setting. The student will learn the steps to become a breastfeeding office, design a lactation service and how to implement the service into your company as well as study the impact of the service using the electronic medical record after it is in place. This course is supported by the Breastfeeding Education Special Interest Group (BFE).

Disruptive Behaviors from Toddlerhood Through Adolescence: Diagnostic and Treatment Approaches

ADHD 300: Beyond the Basics

For non- members, this continuing education activity rate is 10$. The purpose of this presentation is to have a case-based discussion to increase primary care provider (PCP) confidence in caring for children with ADHD symptoms who have other co-morbidities and those who do not have successful clinical response to first medication use. Included in the discussion are the diagnostic criteria for ADHD, anxiety, autism and explosive anger disorder; the guidelines for screening and diagnosis; and discussion of the pharmacologic therapies that reduce core symptoms of the conditions. The presenter will address controversies in prescribing and the realities of clinical primary care management.

Dr. Anne Derouin has worked to provide access to health care via School-Based Health Centers (SBHC), which demonstrate positive effect on health, well-being and academic outcomes of youth. SBHCs provide critical links between educators, families and school resources. Because SBHCs are co-located within schools, they offer the opportunity to assess social determinants of health and Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) among youth, providing data and solutions that are accessible and applicable.

Gayle Higgins has been a pediatric nurse for over 30 years and a PNP for 17 years. She has worked in sub-specialty practice (Pulmonology), and then started an asthma clinic within the primary care clinic. The institution where Gayle worked was in a very poor area and was designated the number two food hungriest congressional district in the nation. Dealing with issues other than medical issues was part of daily practice. Gayle has presented multiple times at conferences about her asthma clinic and what needs to be done to care for a child with asthma.

Her research focuses on eliminating health inequities in childhood obesity in populations of color as well as health disparities research in general. She has also served as a consultant to the City of Detroit Health Department and Detroit Community Health Connection. Her education includes a Bachelors of Science, Masters of Science in Parent Child Nursing, and Postdoctoral Degrees from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. She earned an Executive MBA from Michigan State University and a PhD in Nursing Research from Wayne State University.

She brings her primary care pediatric expertise to the Jefferson Center for Autism and Neurodiversity, where, alongside Dr. Wendy Ross and her team, they are creating an inclusive environment for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Neurodiversity.

In 2006, Michelle was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Bucks New University in England, UK for her career achievements, particularly fostering international research and innovative teaching modalities. Michelle maintains a national/international role as a consultant in leadership and education.
