JPHC CE: Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome in Adolescents: Continuing Education for the Primary Care Provider
1.0 NAPNAP contact hour. This continuing education activity is offered free to NAPNAP Members. For nonmembers, this continuing education activity rate is $10. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) is a multifactorial complaint of anterior knee pain. Patellofemoral pain typically spreads diffusely across the knee, is notable during weight bearing, and is exacerbated by knee flexion. Patellofemoral pain is often insidious in onset, typically with no identifiable mechanism of injury. Factors believed to contribute to PFPS include overuse, muscular imbalance, joint malalignment, and, rarely, trauma to the joint (Bump & Lewis, 2023). J Pediatr Health Care (2025) 39, 686-694.

JPHC CE: Trauma Exposure in Migrant Children: Implications for Mental and Physical Health
1.5 NAPNAP contact hour. This continuing education activity is offered free to NAPNAP Members. For nonmembers, this continuing education activity rate is $10. Global migration is a public health crisis of epidemic proportions. Migrants are at risk for a variety of physical and mental health concerns, while having limited access to healthcare. Migrant children are especially vulnerable to experiencing significant trauma, both physical and emotional. Children comprise less than one third of the global population, yet nearly half of migrants are children less than 18 years of age. The United States is home to a significant number of migrant children. Migrant children have a unique set of educational, health, and emotional needs. Given the sheer number of migrant children living in the U.S., pediatric nurse practitioners (PNP) must understand their unique needs and provide evidence-based interventions to help meet these needs. This continuing education article will discuss migrant children in terms of understanding migration, trauma exposure and resultant impact on psychological and physical health, and implications for practice. J Pediatr Health Care (2025) 40, 1-12.

JPHC CE: The Landscape of Substance Use in Youth-2024
1.0 NAPNAP contact hour. This continuing education activity is offered free to NAPNAP Members. For nonmembers, this continuing education activity rate is $10. An essential role of pediatric providers is to counsel youth and parents on behavioral health issues, including the use of Alcohol or other drugs (AODs). Although substance use by adolescents has decreased, a significant number of adolescents use AODs, causing those with regular use to be at risk of developing behavioral, physical, and mental health consequences that can continue into adulthood. This article was written to help pediatric providers understand the scope and associated effects of AOD use in their adolescent patients and equip them to counsel, identify, and intervene to reduce the harm to their patients who use AODs. J Pediatr Health Care (2025) Issue 6, p1-12.

JPHC CE: Sexting and Sextortion in Adolescents: Essentials for the PNP
1.0 NAPNAP contact hour. This continuing education activity is offered free to NAPNAP Members. For nonmembers, this continuing education activity rate is $10. Sexting and sextortion are increasingly common concerns among adolescents, presenting significant challenges for pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs). Sexting, or digital sharing of self-produced nude or otherwise sexual images, is increasingly seen as a normative part of adolescent sexual exploration, but carries substantial risks, particularly when images are shared non-consensually, by minors, or used as a method of bullying or extortion (“sextortion”). PNPs play a critical role in early identification of any nonconsensual texting and by providing education to adolescents so they may explore their sexuality safely, resist peer pressure, and maintain boundaries. JPHC CE: Monitoring Vaccine Safety: United States Vaccine Safety Surveillance Systems
1.0 NAPNAP contact hour of which contain 1.0 pharmacology content. This continuing education activity is offered free to NAPNAP Members. For nonmembers, this continuing education activity rate is $10. Immunization is an effective public health tool to protect children from hospitalization and death from vaccine-preventable diseases. Vaccine safety monitoring is essential to understand risks of vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention closely monitors vaccine safety through multiple surveillance systems, including V-safe, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD), and the Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment (CISA) network. This paper briefly discusses each surveillance system and available evidence that healthcare providers can use to respond to common vaccine concerns. As trusted sources of information about vaccines, pediatric nurses and nurse practitioners need to understand how vaccine safety is monitored, where to access reliable resources about vaccines, and when and where to report adverse events noted after vaccination. J Pediatr Health Care (2026) 40, Issue 1, P174-186.

JPHC CE: Recognition and Management of Pediatric Dental Trauma and Infections
1.0 NAPNAP contact hour. This continuing education activity is offered free to NAPNAP Members. For nonmembers, this continuing education activity rate is $10. Dental emergencies are common during childhood and typically occur due to trauma or infection. The current evidence on managing dental injuries is from a dental perspective, with limited information on treating pediatric dental injuries in medical settings. Proper treatment of infection, correct storage, prompt repositioning, and replantation are essential for successful outcomes, as supported by the latest evidence-based guidelines. Pediatric patients have a better prognosis when proper treatment is provided without delay. Understanding potential issues enables providers to assess the severity of the condition, offer initial guidance and management, and recommend appropriate follow-up dental care. This continuing education activity aims to educate providers on how to care for children with low-acuity dental injuries and infections using an evidence-based approach. J pediatr Health Care. (2026) 40, 451-463.

JPHC CE: Use of Atypical Antipsychotics in Pediatric Populations
1.75 NAPNAP contact hour of which 1.75 contain pharmacology content (Rx). This continuing education activity is offered free to NAPNAP Members. For nonmembers, this continuing education activity rate is $10. Atypical antipsychotic medications have served as mainstays in the treatment of pediatric-onset bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and are typically prescribed by psychiatric providers. These medications also have an important role in treating specific behaviors associated with other pediatric diagnoses, including autism spec-trum disorder, disruptive behavior disorders, and tic disorders. Nurse practitioners play an important role in initiating treatment in children who require these drugs and monitoring those who are already prescribed these medications by psychiatric professionals. The pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacogenomic implications for aripiprazole, olanzapine, quetiapine, and risperidone are described. This article reviews appropriate approaches to prescribing, monitoring for efficacy and side effects, and considerations when tapering or discontinuing antipsychotic medications. Guidance for Implementing the AAP's 2023 Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Treatment of Pediatric Obesity in Primary Care
1.00 NAPNAP Contact Hour. This course is an archived session from NAPNAP's Pediatric Virtual Symposium: 2024 Targeted Topics. The 2023 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) CPG for the Evaluation and Treatment of Obesity in Children and Adolescents recommends that children 2-18 years with overweight/obesity be comprehensively evaluated for comorbidities and offered multicomponent, family-based, Intensive Health Behavior and Lifestyle Treatment (IHBLT). This session will focus on the core components of IHBLT and the associated health outcomes. Additionally, participants will learn how to locate recognized Family Healthy Weight Programs and steps to take if there are no local programs. Led by a member of the AAP clinical practice guideline writing team and a member of the NAPNAP Childhood Obesity SIG, this session will help primary care providers assess and build their capacity around IHBLT.
