When Healing Means Letting Go: A Perspective on Deprescribing Antidepressants

0.75 NAPNAP contact hours of which 0.5 pharmacology content, and 0.5 psychopharmacology content. This continuing education activity is offered as part of the Pediatric Pharmacology Bundle. This course is a record presentation for NAPNAP's 2026 National Conference.

Approximately 12% of Americans take an antidepressant. Traditional guidance has been to taper these medications over a few weeks and that withdrawal symptoms will be brief and mild. However, the reality experienced by many patients is quite different. This presentation will discuss common withdrawal symptoms, how to differentiate withdrawal from relapse, and hyperbolic tapering - an emerging method which can reduce withdrawal intensity and support safer discontinuation of these medications.

This archived presentation from our 2026 national conference is available only as part of a bundle of pharmacology courses recorded during our 2026 conference in Pittsburgh.
