Ethics in the PICU: The Art of Providing Care for the Chronically Critically Ill Child

Pediatric-focused nurse practitioners in the PICU provide care for chronically, critically ill children every day. With the advancement of technology, many of these children are surviving and even thriving. However, ethical conflict can sometimes arise between providers and caregivers when these children become critically ill. Providers must then discuss and merge these conflicts while keeping the best interests of the child in mind.  The presenter will review an ethical principles and discuss relevant cases studies, providing in-depth discussion regarding strategies to providing compassionate, ethical care in the PICU for these critically ill children

Heather Herrera is a dually certified pediatric nurse practitioner working in a busy 24-bed PICU at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and works as an assistant professor with Baylor College of Medicine. She also enjoys being a pediatric acute care updates committee member with the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children.
