The Child with Anxiety


Anxiety is the most common mental health concern seen in pediatric and primary care practices. This session will focus on the evidence-based screening, assessment and early intervention for children who present in primary care with significant anxiety symptoms. Cognitive behavioral interventions for routine 20 – 30 min  visits will be described and demonstrated. 

This continuing education activity is administered by the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) as an Agency providing continuing education credit. Individuals who complete this program and earn a 70% or higher score on the post test will be awarded 1.0 NAPNAP contact hours, of which 0 is pharmacology content.

• Discuss the prevalence of anxiety in school age children and the need for timely, evidence-based interventions 
• Describe common presentations of anxiety and stress related disorders in children ( DSM 5 criteria)
• Identify screening tools and evidence-based treatments recommended for anxious children                                    
• Discuss the implementation of a cognitive behavioral skills building program as an evidence-based, first line intervention for children with anxiety in pediatric/primary care practices
