Meningococcal Prevention: Real Stories, Real Questions, and Real Impact
1.0 NAPNAP Contact Hour. This continuing education activity is offered free to NAPNAP Members and for non- members.
Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is a rare but rapidly progressing and potentially fatal illness that can affect healthy infants, children, and adolescents without warning—often leading to severe outcomes such as sepsis, limb loss, neurological damage, or death within hours. Adolescents and young adults are at particularly high risk due to close-contact behaviors and their role as key transmitters of Neisseria meningitidis; recent US data show a concerning rise in cases, including higher-than-historical case fatality rates driven by serogroup Y. Although effective vaccines are available, many children and teens remain underprotected because of gaps in clinician application of evolving guidelines and limited parental awareness of the need for a complete vaccine series. Studies indicate that clinicians often feel unprepared to navigate shared decision-making for MenB vaccination or to address vaccine hesitancy, while parents frequently underestimate disease risk or are unaware that meningococcal vaccines exist. Clinician recommendation remains the most powerful driver of vaccine uptake—underscoring the need for improved education, communication tools, and system-level supports. In this CE activity, expert faculty assess the burden and risk factors of IMD, outline the types of meningococcal vaccines and strategies to improve uptake and series completion, and address caregiver concerns to alleviate vaccine hesitancy.
