Diabetes is a chronic condition that requires intensive medical and psychological management with rapidly rising prevalence in the U.S. The most common form of pediatric diabetes is type 1 diabetes, affecting 1.25 million children who are two to four times more likely to have other autoimmune conditions including Hashimoto's thyroiditis, celiac disease and adrenal insufficiency than the general population. Timely screenings as recommended by the American Diabetes Association and proper assessment is key to identifying comorbidities and preventing both diabetes related complications as well as treating associated endocrine pathologies including those that can be potentially life threatening. This case-based, interactive presentation will provide pediatric advanced practice providers with robust clinical pearls on recognizing and managing endocrine disorders commonly seen in patients with diabetes mellitus, type 1.

Mili Vakharia, MSN, APRN, FNP-C
Mili Vakharia is a clinical instructor in section of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Texas Children's Hospital. She has served as the former president for the Houston NAPNAP chapter. She has presented nationally at various conferences on multiple occasions. She serves as co-lead for Diabetes Quality Improvement Committee, the education care process team that focuses on improving use of diabetes technology and education. Her clinical interests include diabetes and thyroid disorders.
Grace Kim, MD
Dr. Grace Kim an assistant professor in section of Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology at Texas Children’s Hospital. She is member of Pediatric Endocrine Society. She has a primarily clinical focus, with interests in education and quality improvement. She is the medical director of the Diabetes Care Bay in one of the community hospitals, where diabetes patients with mild ketosis are managed. She also co-leads a Diabetes Quality Improvement Committee, the education care process team.
