This presentation reviews the neurological/biological basis and treatment of psychiatric conditions common to children and adolescents. The presenters will cover the basic anatomy and physiology of the brain to guide a neurological review of common pediatric psychiatric conditions. This knowledge is then used to discuss the pharmacological treatment of psychiatric conditions in the clinical setting.

Introduction: This continuing education activity is administered by the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) as an Agency providing continuing education credit. Individuals who complete this program and earn a 70% or higher score on the post test will be awarded 1.75 NAPNAP contact hour, of which 1.75 is Pharmacology and 1.75 Psychopharmacology.

Joshua Palmer, DNP, PMHNP, RN and Susan Van Cleve, DNP, RN, CPNP-PC, PMHS, FAANP

Dr. Palmer has presented and published on psychiatric topics across the lifespan including screening for adolescent vaping use, adolescent substance use, opioid use disorder treatments, neurobiological perspectives of mental illness and methods to reduce medication use for behavioral disturbances in dementia. Today, he continues to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the treatment delivery of psychiatric treatment.

Dr. Susan Van Cleve earned her BSN from the University of Pittsburgh, her MSN from Boston College, and her DNP from Robert Morris University. She works as PNP faculty at the University of Iowa and also as a Pediatric Mental Health Specialist in a private pediatric practice in Pittsburgh, where she provides comprehensive care for children and adolescents with developmental, behavioral, and mental health disorders.
