Penicillin allergy, the most commonly reported allergy in a pediatric patient, is associated with increases in cost of care, hospitalization and morbidity, as well as contributing to antibiotic resistance. However, 95% of patients labeled with a penicillin allergy do not have a true allergy. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention has identified improper use of antibiotics to be an important factor that must be addressed for both patient safety and public health. This presentation will identify high-risk symptoms of allergy, differentiate between adverse reactions, IgE-mediated allergic reaction and delayed T-cell reactions, as well as discuss appropriate testing for penicillin allergy.
