The hand is one of the most frequently injured parts of a child's body, accounting for approximately 15% of pediatric fractures and 2.3% of all pediatric emergency room visits. Early recognition along with appropriate and timely management of these injuries is necessary in order to prevent potential functional deficits or cosmetic deformities. The presenter will provide clinical pearls for evaluating pediatric/adolescent hand injuries and review current treatment recommendations for both definitive care as well as initial management in the primary care and acute care emergency room settings.

With the advancement of technology, many of these children are surviving and even thriving. However, ethical conflict can sometimes arise between providers and caregivers when these children become critically ill. Jennifer Joiner is a dual certified pediatric nurse practitioner who serves as the inpatient nurse practitioner for The Children’s Heart Center at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio for Baylor College of Medicine. Jen has had the privilege of taking care of almost every population of patient in critical care and has been a preceptor and lead of several advanced practice groups. She served as an original test item writer for the PNCB's pilot exam in Acute Care in 2004 and assisted the PNCB by writing acute care pediatric updates for many years.
